Top 5 Flower Care Tips

POV: you’ve just received a gorgeous floral arrangement…now how do you make it last? Proper flower care is KEY in keeping your flowers looking fresh for as long as possible! Our floral designers share their top 5 tips to keep your blooms looking and feeling their best!

Tip #1: Change the water often

The water should be replaced with fresh, cool water every 2 - 3 days in order to keep it clean and drinkable for the flowers! If you keep the same water for too long, it may lead to bacteria in the water which will cause your flowers to wilt. Hint: if your water is dirty, your flowers are definitely due for fresh water.

Tip #2: Use flower food

Flower food helps your flowers to stay looking bright and fresh! Follow the instructions on the packet to ensure you are not using too much or too little food. Using too much flower food can actually lead to a decline in your flowers. Fun Fact: Each arrangement of flowers we deliver already contains flower food so there is no need to change out the water or open the flower food packet for a few days!

Tip #3: Cut the stems at an angle

Every time you change out the water, give each stem a little trim (about an inch). This will help keep the cells fresh and allow the flower to drink more water. When you snip the stem, turn your clippers or scissors to a 45 degree angle.

Tip #4: Keep your flowers away from heat and direct sunlight

Cut flowers will wilt if kept in the direct sunlight for too long. It is important to keep them in a cooler place in order to extend the life of the flowers. However, you don’t want them to get too cold either—so make sure to keep them away from air vents too!

Tip #5: Remove brown pieces as they dry and wilt

Take out the stems that start to wilt first from the arrangement, leaving you with the best looking flowers. By removing single stems, it will keep bacteria out of the water for the other flowers and help them to last longer. It will also keep the overall look of your arrangement looking fresh.

Tip #5: After disposing of the flowers, wash out the vase completely

When your flowers have reached the end of their life, it is important to wash out the vase completely to get rid of any bacteria that may have grown in there. This will keep your flowers looking fresh the next time you go to put flowers in there.
